Overview and Mission

The mission of the Young Leadership Council (YLC), the next generation of LRI leaders, is to advance the cause of people living with lupus by raising awareness and organizing philanthropic initiatives to benefit the Lupus Research Institute (LRI).

In 2000 friends and families of people with systemic lupus stopped waiting around for better treatments and a cure and did something about it. At the time the outlook for lupus was relatively bleak, with little movement towards a greater understanding of its cause or potential cure, and decades had passed with no new treatments approved. Through hard work and determination, these friends and families established the Lupus Research Institute to change the outlook for people with lupus.

LRI is driven and relentless in its dedication to one transparent agenda: to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for this complex and dangerous autoimmune disease by unleashing the collaborative creativity and passion of the scientific community in the exploration of uncharted territory in lupus inquiry. This bold and inventive approach is our organization’s hallmark and testament to our ultimate optimism.

But, while we boldly strive for advances in lupus research, we are first and foremost about people—the 1.5 million Americans and millions more worldwide who struggle with lupus, and the extraordinary families and friends who care for them. That is why LRI Chicago, the newly named headquarters of the Midwest Division of the Lupus Research Institute, has developed the Young Leadership Council of LRI Chicago.

LRI relies exclusively on philanthropy for support. As the next generation of leaders, members of the YLC of LRI Chicago will introduce our organization to others who wish to help, develop, organize and host local events in support of research and create public awareness through advocacy efforts.
