S.L.E. Lupus Foundation, the country's preeminent nonprofit providing direct patient services, education, public awareness, and funding for novel lupus research through its partnership with the Lupus Research Institute (LRI), seeks a talented Vice President of Development to provide leadership and strategic direction for the Foundation and the Institute’s comprehensive fundraising programs.

Headquartered in New York City and working closely with offices in Los Angeles and Chicago, the new VP reports directly to the President/CEO. This position leads and manages a $9M fundraising program for both the Foundation and LRI, guiding growth in all areas of development (from corporate sponsorship to events, from major gifts to foundations).

Ideal candidates have 10+ years of nonprofit leadership experience, including exceptional results with volunteer boards and program development.

About S.L.E. Lupus Foundation and Lupus Research Institute

Lupus is a complex autoimmune disease affecting 1.5 million primarily female individuals nationwide. Despite the large number of people afflicted with Lupus, a new treatment has not been approved in nearly 50 years. The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation’s programs include funding for research grants and fellowships, and services for lupus patients including physician referrals, social services, community outreach, educational programs, peer counseling, and support groups. The Foundation also conducts extensive public awareness programs including media relations and public service advertising.

The Foundation has a national reach and scope. Headquartered in New York City, and working closely with its offices in Chicago and Los Angeles, the Foundation is part of a National Coalition of state and local lupus organizations. The Coalition collaborates with numerous healthcare, women's, scientific, and governmental organizations at the state and national levels to advance awareness and advocate for increased funding of biomedical research in lupus. This national network creates a field of leaders, advocates, and volunteers who work to identify and promote fundraising opportunities.

The Foundation’s work with the Lupus Research Institute (LRI) serves as a catalyst for a cure. LRI is the country’s only nonprofit organization singularly devoted to funding novel lupus research. They serve as champions for innovation, encouraging scientific creativity and exploring uncharted territory to bring new scientific solutions to this complex and dangerous autoimmune disease. Since 2001, LRI has awarded more than $30 million in novel research grants to 102 scientists at leading institutions nationwide. To date, 65% of grant recipients have since secured additional funding, totaling more than $70 million, from NIH and other sources to expand on their breakthrough research.

The Position

The new Vice President of Development will be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of development and fundraising operations for both the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation and the Lupus Research Institute (LRI), and increasing revenue from its current $9M+ annually for the two organizations (both housed in its New York City offices). In this context, the Vice President will develop the case for philanthropic support for both the Foundation and LRI and direct fundraising and stewardship activities across all regional offices -- presently New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. He/She will guide all areas of fundraising growth including major gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving, and special events while managing their own portfolio of prospects and donors. The Vice President will also oversee the initiatives to establish and grow a new media and web-based fundraising program.

The Vice President will be a seasoned senior manager and be responsible for the strategic direction of all development efforts, including budget development, prospect research, data analysis, and reporting on fundraising performance. In this capacity, the Vice President will formulate and lead the strategy to grow annual revenue on a regional and national level, while partnering with the Board of Directors and President and CEO to prepare and implement a three-year Development strategic plan to support existing and new programs.

The Vice President will focus on deepening relationships with the Board, individual, and foundation donors. Working in partnership with the highly committed Board of Directors and President and CEO, the Vice President will develop a fundraising strategy and plan for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects/donors, as well as set goals and policies. The Vice President will have ongoing direct access to Board members and will also have the opportunity to partner with Board members on key solicitations. Four staff members report directly to the Vice President and he/she will build, lead, manage, train, and motivate this collaborative development team.

Outstanding candidates will possess:

  • 10+ years of proven measurable success in fundraising and/or marketing showing increasing leadership and responsibility in all facets of development; Demonstrated track record will also include strategic planning, implementation and continuous development of such strategies;
  • Exceptional track record of fundraising results motivating, mobilizing and working with volunteers and boards. This includes proven ability to strengthen and deepen relationships with all Board and major corporate, foundation, and individual prospects;
  • Ability to understand and endorse the mission and vision of the Board.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to lead and manage staff and build a dynamic team of professionals; well developed analytical and problem solving abilities;
  • Successful track record in securing leadership gifts from individuals and from national and local foundations and corporations;
  • Planning and executing ability for sophisticated special events;
  • Outstanding writing and communication skills. Ability to communicate with clarity, persuasion and grace -- both orally and in writing;
  • Marketing sensibility and the ability to think strategically about messaging to different audiences (but formal marketing roles and responsibilities not required);
  • Knowledge of the philanthropic landscape; and
  • Detail oriented and highly organized with the ability to deal with fluid situations and relationships.

Bachelor’s degree is required. Graduate Degree and/or CFRE a plus.

Occasional travel is required.
