Our unique approach

The Lupus Research Institute (LRI) is the nation’s only nonprofit organization solely dedicated to novel research in lupus.

We believe that innovative research is the key to finding safer and more effective treatments and a cure for lupus.

Our results indicate we’re on the right track. With our bold approach and rigorous standards, we’re making the breakthroughs that spell compelling new hope for the 1.5 million Americans, and the millions more worldwide, who suffer from this devastating autoimmune illness.

No one does what we do; the LRI approach is unique. Read more

Rapid Pace of Scientific Progress

Established in 2000, we now have the largest number and widest range of lupus research investigations nationwide—LRI scientists are at 55 academic medical centers across 22 states.

We’ve awarded $30 million to 87 novel ideas in lupus.

Breakthroughs have been made in understanding

  • the genetics of lupus
  • why and how certain organs get attacked in lupus—the brain, cardiovascular system, kidneys, skin
  • basic “mistakes” in the autoimmune response
  • biomarkers of lupus development and flare.

We’ve shaken up the field and are changing the very course of lupus research. Read more

We credit our success not only to our unique approach but to our inpsired leadership and distinguished scientific advisors, who oversee our rigorous peer review of grant proposals.

Champion of Clinical Trials

To translate discovery in the laboratory to safer and more effective treatments for lupus—there hasn’t been a new one approved in nearly 50 years—clinical trials in lupus need more participants.
